Historian to present local pottery program
SINCLAIRVILLE – The program about the early 19th century redware/stoneware pottery in Gerry, operated by Caleb Mathews, has been rescheduled for Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sinclairville Library. Mathews ran the pottery from 1821 to about 1850.
Historian Vince Martonis, who has studied the pottery for over 40 years, will display many pieces of Mathews’ pottery along with pottery sherds from the site. He will teach the attendees how to identify the work of Mathews by studying his “nested numbers” and his “grip edge handles.”
Specimens of Mathews pottery on loan from the Fenton will also be on display. Martonis’s recently published book about the pottery, with 30 color photos and 19 black and white, will be for sale below cost at $15.
