One Hospitalized After Chemical Leak
The Celoron Volunteer Fire Department responded to the Harbor Hotel for a reported employee in respiratory distress around 8:30 a.m. Monday. Upon arrival at 10 Dunham Ave., fire department officials treated and transported the distressed employee to the emergency room, and began operations to ventilate and isolate the chemicals the employee was using at the time of the emergency.
“The employee mixed bleach with an unknown acid type material,” said Tim Nelson, Celoron Volunteer Fire Department second assistant chief. “He was transported to the hospital, and I called for additional supporting units because I could barely walk into the room the employee was working at. The room he (employee) was in is an intake for ventilation for the building. I called additional units for support because I could smell the chemical mixture clear-up on the fourth floor. The entire building has been evacuated, the chemical mixture is in the parking lot secured and we’re airing out and ventilating the entire building.”
Responding fire departments included the Village of Lakewood Fire Department; Busti Fire Department; County Emergency, fire and ambulatory units along with Hazmat support.
Harbor Hotel officials were unavailable for comment and a message was left with a hotel employee for the hotel’s general manager.
At around 11:49 a.m. fire officials cleared the location to be reoccupied.
According to thechautauquaharborhotel.com the hotel has 135 deluxe guest rooms and suites along the Pier Ballroom and Conference Center which has a 450 person seating capacity.
