County Honors Spanos For Decades of Service
MAYVILLE, NY – Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. publicly commended the retirement of Dr. Mary Ann Spanos, Director of the Office for Aging Services, during the recent legislature meeting. Dr. Spanos has been at the forefront of advocating for the county’s seniors for over two decades, marking the end of an era in local aging services.
In a letter of commendation read aloud, Wendel praised Spanos for her unwavering dedication, stating, “Dr. Spanos has exemplified exceptional leadership, improving the lives of countless seniors throughout Chautauqua County.” He highlighted her tenure, which spanned from 1999 to her retirement on September 18, 2024, noting her role in spearheading programs that ensure independence, optimal health, and wellness for seniors in a safe and secure environment.
Dr. Spanos’ career as a physical therapist specializing in geriatric rehabilitation began in 1986. Since taking the helm at the Office for Aging Services, her impact has been profound, with initiatives focused on helping seniors remain in their homes and stay connected to their communities. Wendel also acknowledged her national leadership as President of USAging, advocating for seniors’ needs on a broader scale.
In recognition of her many achievements, Spanos was named a “Woman of Distinction” by the New York State Senate in 2022, underscoring her commitment to enhancing the quality of life for older adults.
Wendel’s letter concluded with heartfelt gratitude: “I thank Dr. Spanos for her unwavering service, her commitment to the well-being of our seniors, and her role as an inspiring leader in our community, and wish her all the best in retirement.”
In conjunction with her retirement, the County has appointed Dana Corwin as the Interim Director of the Office for Aging Services. Corwin, a registered nurse and Mayville resident, has been part of the department since 2008, working closely with Spanos to advocate for seniors.
“Dana’s appointment ensures that we will continue to build on the strong foundation Dr. Spanos has laid over the years,” said Wendel. “I am confident that under Dana’s leadership, we will continue to provide critical services to our seniors and their families.”
Corwin, expressing her gratitude, said, “Dr. Spanos taught me not only the logistical side of running this office but also the heart behind it. Her passion for helping people stay in their homes and communities is something I will carry forward.”
