Couple Charged In Friday City Fracas

Two individuals are facing charges after a fight in front of two children that later led to a Jamestown police officer being injured.

Jamestown police report they responded to a 911 investigation at a west side residence around 4:15 p.m. Friday regarding a young child stating that there was a fight inside the residence. Upon arrival, officers observed Nekyle R. Taylor, 31, on his front porch, locked out of his residence by Chelsey L. Durnell, 30.

Officers were able to make contact inside the residence with Durnell who was inside with a 4-year-old and 7-year-old. The children were visibly upset upon the officer’s arrival on scene due to the reported fight.

While speaking with Durnell and Taylor it was apparent that both parties were highly intoxicated while they were entrusted to care for the juveniles. Through further investigation it was found that both had also engaged in a physical altercation in front of the children.

Due to the fight and the level of intoxication of the two, officers attempted to place both subjects into custody. While attempting to place Durnell into custody, she began to pull away from officers in an attempt to evade arrest.

During the incident, the juveniles came outside of the residence and became hysterical due to Durnell’s behavior while being placed into custody. While officers were separting the children from the scene, Durnell dropped her shoulder into an officer’s chest while the officer had her hands behind her back while attempting to place her into custody. This caused the officer to fall backwards off a porch and down four steps onto concrete with Durnell on top. After a brief struggle, she was then taken into custody without incident.

The officer did not sustain any serious physical injury. She was transported to Jamestown City Jail where she was held pending arraignment on six counts of endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest and second-degree reckless endangerment. Taylor was placed into custody without incident and facing four counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of second-degree unlawful imprisonment.

The children were safely turned over to a family member. Both were arraigned in Jamestown City Court and released to return at a later date.
