A website has rated Fredonia as the No. 1 place to retire in New York State.

Village Mayor Michael Ferguson and several others pointed out the designation by GoBankingRates.com to the OBSERVER. They noted a Monday Travel + Leisure magazine article that talked up Fredonia while reporting the rating.

The ranking was based on population statistics, cost of living, and average mortgage costs, the article said.

The village “has much to offer retirees on a budget,” as GoBankingRates.com “estimates the average monthly cost of living is $1,761.”

The magazine also mentioned that about 23% of the population is aged 65 or older. “According to the Fredonia’s State University of New York campus website, retirees are allowed access to the university’s library, gym, exercise facilities, and financial planning services.”

The writer goes on to point out that Fredonia is close to Lake Erie and its recreational opportunities, and “is surrounded by scenic vineyards.”
