Mayville mayor proposes slight tax decrease in budget
MAYVILLE – Mayor Rick Syper is proposing a slight tax decrease for the 2025-2026 year.
During the recent Mayville Village Board meeting, Syper presented his tentative budget to the trustees. The full budget is $2,130,542 with a levy, the amount raised through taxes, at $830,000.
His budget calls for a property tax rate of $6.65 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, which is 5 cents lower than the current tax rate.
The biggest project in the upcoming year is for Lakeside Park.
Back in 2022, Mayville approved to seek a grant for improving the landing plaza near the Chautauqua Belle, installing a handicapped-accessible kayak launch, and installing a waterfront pedestrian and bicycle trail.
They were later approved for $650,000 from the state. The county would provide $50,000 and the village would be responsible for $175,000.
Syper said they hope to go out to bid in February for the landing plaza and the trail. He doesn’t know yet if the proposed kayak launch will be able to happen yet.
According to Syper, the state Department of Environmental Conservation is concerned about “endangered mussels” in the lake. He doesn’t know how long it will take for a determination to be made if the kayak launch can be installed or not.

Only the town of Ellery has expressed support for the plan.
— The village will be advertising for a Request For Proposals for the Depot and nearby dock space on Route 394 in the village.
— The Feb. 11 village board meeting has been rescheduled to Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m.
