Cashless tolling project update
The New York state Thruway Authority is going to deliver the cashless tolling system by the end of this year.
At a press conference on Tuesday, the Thruway Authority spoke of the new cashless tolling system being introduced. The project started last fall and naturally slowed down during the winter months, but is going to pick back up coming into the spring and summer season.
“At the end of this project you’ll see 70 gantries across 58 locations across the entire ticketed system,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll.
At the end of the year, when the cashless tolling system goes live, all toll workers will be out of jobs. “We have been working with toll workers for nearly two years now a number of training programs, CDL programs and educational opportunities,” said Driscoll. There are about 1,200 jobs being lost with this new system.
