Fireworks unknown, taxes an issue for Dunkirk
Things in Dunkirk remain unclear regarding summer activities. In a call with the OBSERVER Mayor Wilfred Rosas stated that the next big event being looked at is the Fourth of July.
“At this time I haven’t made a decision regarding that. It’s going to depend on a lot of factors,” Rosas stated. “If social distancing is still going to be on the table then I don’t see how we can have a gathering like that and maintain control.”
When asked if the fireworks might still take place that people can watch from their homes, Rosas said that that could be a possibility, but he still isn’t sure.
The sales tax loss came up as well. According to Rosas the city lost 28% of budgeted revenue this quarter, but he expects the August payment to be much more significant.
“Our biggest concern is the 20% we receive from the state,” Rosas stated. “If the state doesn’t get what it asked for from the federal government in the next stimulus package, cuts to local governments might be on the table.”
Rosas said that it is not a likely prospect that Dunkirk won’t see anything from New York, but it is possible.
