Remembering the history of the Silver Creek waterfront park
SILVER CREEK — In 1988, the Waterfront Park in Silver Creek, on Front and Jackson streets, was dedicated to the late George S. Borrello, former village mayor.
A ceremony was held in 1988, about a year after Borrello’s passing. Borrello’s wife was asked to cut the ribbon, officially dedicating the park to her late husband. A sign was then placed near the pavilion, honoring Borrello. The sign has been updated since, giving it a fresh look.
“Silver Creek Mayor (at the time) Wayne E. Martin emphasized that the park was a vision and dream of former Mayor George Borrello,” reads an article ran in the OBSERVER in 1988.
Still standing is a picnic shelter, beach area, boat launch, free public boat ramp and parking lot for residents to access as they please. These areas have been maintained and improved over the years, including adding benches, a flagpole, and a plaque in Borrello’s name. Borrello’s son, Anthony Borrello, and his wife plant flowers next to the plaque every year, remembering his father’s legacy.
“My father paid a gentleman to drive him back and forth to Albany to try to get grants from the state to help fix up the park,” Anthony said. “My dad put a lot of his own money into this park. He really believed in it and loved it.”
The park’s beach is now being restored by the village, by putting in boulders in the water to encourage sand to come back up onto the beach, which should be finished in a few years. Anthony also advocates for more improvements to come into the park, like they used to back in the 1980s, such as have fireworks, a playground for kids, and entertainment.
