Five municipalities have more than 25 active virus cases

As of Christmas Eve, five municipalities in Chautauqua County had reported upwards of 25 active cases of COVID-19.

The Chautauqua County Health Department, which last released numbers from Dec. 23 and is expected to release numbers from the holiday weekend on Monday, reported that Jamestown had 127 active cases of the coronavirus, Dunkirk had 41 cases, Fredonia had 34 cases, Frewsburg had 30 and Mayville had 29.

Spectrum News reported last week that a small cluster had been linked to The Magnolia in Frewsburg. Mayville’s cases have lingered from an outbreak at the Chautauqua County Jail that was first reported at the beginning of December. Meanwhile, Jamestown mayor Eddie Sundquist reported a “spike” in cases among city workers at a council work session last week that has contributed to the large volume of cases coming from its zip code.

Though the county has not released statistics, New York Forward, the state’s COVID-19 hub, reported that 113 tests came back as positive on Dec. 24, 62 came back positive on Dec. 25 and 13 came back positive on Dec. 27. Those numbers typically vary slightly from those released by the county on Mondays.

As we near the end of the holiday season, New York remains locked in a footrace between the vaccine’s quick distribution and COVID-19’s continued spread,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a release. “It has been a tough year and we still have several tough months ahead, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and we will make it there if we all do our part to slow the spread. New York is working closely with the medical community to not only administer the vaccine, but to continue growing capacity as well. As that work progresses, the rest of us need to step up, stay united and continue doing what we know works-wearing masks, staying socially distanced and washing our hands.”

In neighboring Cattaraugus County, the health reported three additional COVID-related deaths Saturday evening. The deaths, involving a 44-year-old man, 92-year-old woman and 71-year-old man, mark 44 to date in the county and six in the last three days. A 45th death was listed on the county’s dashboard, but had not been specified as of press time.

Earlier Saturday, health officials reported the 41st COVID-related death and 48 new cases for Christmas Day.

In Cattaraugus, 32 new COVID-19 cases were reported Sunday, upping the total to 2,296. There are currently 536 active cases in addition to 1,715 total recoveries, 37 county residents with the virus in the hospital and a seven-day positivity rate of 6.9%.

Western New York and the eight counties encompassing it meanwhile saw a decrease in hospitalizations over the weekend after seeing a one-day uptick to 496 on Dec. 23, reporting 471 on Saturday. The Finger Lakes region meanwhile saw a record-high in hospitalizations on Saturday with 921.
