Two car clubs approved for shows in Point Gratiot

After a month of discussion and a prior vote against it, the Dunkirk Common Council voted unanimously at Tuesday’s meeting to allow Lowriginal Car Club to host its show at Point Gratiot in the city of Dunkirk on July 18.

First Ward Councilman Don Williams spoke briefly of the March 5 Department of Public Works committee meeting where three members of the club spoke on their show, impressing him and Fourth Ward Councilwoman Nancy Nichols.

“We are all in agreement to bring this up to reconsider their request,” Williams said.

A motion made to bring it back to the table was approved.

“They gave a very good presentation,” Nichols chimed in.

“Don and I were quite impressed with the way they handled things and we do know many, many of the people that have vehicles that do participate in that as well as (Fire) Chief (Mike) Edwards knows and he also did give them a high recommendation because this is near and dear to his heart.”

Another group, the Unique Car Club also sought approval for their car show to be held Aug. 14. Juan Rivera, founder of the group was present at that March 5 meeting as well.

“He explained how he runs it (the show) and he assured us that he leaves the park in good shape, so hopefully between the police department and parks we can maybe go through when it’s done, just to make sure it’s in good shape so we’re not blaming the wrong people,” Williams said.

“My concern is the loudness of the music for the residents that live down there,” Nichols shared.

“I think that was everyone’s concern in that meeting we had with them, I think we kind of got the message out, the ball’s in their court, depends on how they act and the way that they leave it,” Councilman-at-large Paul VanDenVouver noted, “I think we made it very clear to everybody that’s going to be renting the parks and with that I’m satisfied.”

Unique Car Club’s petition passed with a 3-2 vote with Nichols and Third Ward Councilman James Stoyle being against it.
