In-person activities return to Silver Creek library
SILVER CREEK — While the Anderson Lee Library has been open to the public since last June, its April events schedule features something its hasn’t had for more than a year: an in-person events schedule.
Preschool story time, run by Miss Jill, will be held every Thursday morning at 10:30. The program is for children ages 2 to 5, and will feature stories, songs and simple crafts, with themes that run through it so everything is connected. The event will last 30-45 minutes.
“It’s the first thing we’re actually holding here in over a year,” said Amy O’Connell, who coordinates the children and young adult programs at the library. “Everything for the last year has been virtual or take-and-make.”
As Anderson Lee Library is a small facility, the capacity for the event is limited to five children, who are required to pre-register by calling the library at 934-3468 or registering on the website. Wearing masks is a requirement to attend as well.
“We’re a small library, which is why the number has to be small,” O’Connell said. “We have to be able to distance. We’ll sanitize and wipe everything down.”
The April events schedule is just the tip of the iceberg for in-person events returning to the library. Although the exact logistics haven’t yet been worked out, O’Connell, who coordinates the summer reading program, said program will return by the end of June.
“It feels good to be able to offer something,” O’Connell said. “I coordinate the summer reading program at the end of June, and we’re not exactly sure what we’re going to do yet, but the summer reading program will be back. It won’t be like it was two years ago, but hopefully it won’t be like last year either.”
In addition to the preschool story time, the library’s computers are open for use. While the library can support some people who wish to walk in, in order to secure usage, those interested are encouraged to call and reserve their spot beforehand. A couple adult and children computers are available for an hour at a time.
Most programming at Anderson Lee Library remains either virtual or available via the “Take and Make Activity Kits”. Patrons of all ages are welcome to stop by for the free take home kit for home use.
The library is celebrating National Poetry Month in April, and will be giving out poetry writing kits to adults, teens, and children. Each kit includes a blank journal, pencil, and writing prompts. On top of that, there will be a Stained Glass Kite kit for the library’s youngest patrons. Kits are available on a first come, first serve basis.
Anderson-Lee Library, located at 43 Main Street in Silver Creek, is open to the public Monday and Tuesday from 12-8 pm, Thursday 10 am to 8 pm, Friday 12-5 pm, and Saturday 10 am-2 pm. The library is closed Wednesday and Sunday.
