Teen drowns in Lake Erie
Dunkirk Police Chief David Ortolano called the apparent drowning of a teenager early Monday in the city a “tragic accident.”
First responders were called to the Dunkirk City Pier around 12:45 a.m. for a report of a juvenile possibly in the water. Ortolano said two males went into the water east of the pier while only one exited.
The teen who managed to get out was the one who summoned for help, the police chief confirmed. A search then ensued, with the county’s Water Emergency Team, Sheriff’s Office marine units and Chautauqua County EMS assisting local police and firefighters.
A body was located sometime in the early morning hours, and the male was later pronounced dead by a county coroner.
Ortolano said the incident is being viewed as an accidental drowning and noted that the victim was a 16-year-old Dunkirk area resident. “All we know at this point is that we got the call for a missing swimmer east of the city pier,” he said of the original call, later adding, “It’s just a tragic accident.”
Monday’s incident is the second such drowning involving a juvenile locally in the last few days.
The Pennsylvania State Police said it is still investigating an accidental drowning involving a 2 year old girl that occurred Saturday morning in neighboring Warren County. Troopers had received word of a missing child near Tidioute, Pa., along the Allegheny River. It was determined that the 2-year-old — identified in her obituary as Izzy Rae Peterson — left her residence some time before 11 a.m. and walked to an area close to the river.
The child was believed to have fallen into the water, prompting a large search involving several agencies. The girl’s body was found in a debris pile by a relative Sunday 1 mile south from where she was suspected of falling into the river.
“The Warren County coroner has … determined the cause of death to be listed as an accidental drowning,” the Pennsylvania State Police stated in a news release Sunday evening. “The incident is still currently under investigation.”
