Brocton debates holding Halloween activities
BROCTON — With Halloween right around the corner, the village Board of Trustees has begun working on ironing out their plans for this year’s holiday. This year, Halloween lands on a Sunday, which can cause some complications for municipalities for what day they want to hold trick-or-treating.
“We have to determine what day of the week we want it,” said village Clerk Scott Jagoda. “We can do it on Sunday and we need to see if the Fire Department is doing anything like a parade so we can coordinate with them.”
The Village Board floated the idea of having trick-or-treating on the Saturday before Halloween, on Oct. 30. Last year, Halloween’s hours in Brocton ran from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., but Trustee Bryan Woleben suggested doing it 5 to 7:30 p.m. to accommodate for how quickly it gets dark. On top of that, Woleben said that it’s likely more people would come to the Fire Hall for any events on Saturday.
“It doesn’t matter to me what day we hold it but I would think you’d get more participation at the Hall on a Saturday,” Woleben said. “I would have to call Jimmy (Rizzo) and check with him.”
Despite that, Trustee Craig Miller advocated for keeping any village festivities on the day of Halloween itself, which is the consensus that the rest of the board came to. The matter at hand then became organizing with the Fire Hall on if they would do a parade. The board said it had been a few years since the parade was done, and Woleben said the last few parades that were held petered off in the middle.
“I’ll be very honest, the last few parades we’ve done, by the time we got down Smith Street, kids were all over,” Woleben said.
With the date set for Halloween itself, the Board will communicate with the Fire Department to coordinate any other festivities that day may hold.
