‘Personnel issue’ leads to resignation by Bentley

MAYVILLE — Chautauqua County is looking for a new director of its Public Facilities Department.

During a meeting Wednesday morning of the legislature’s Audit and Control Committee, DPF director Brad Bentley announced he was resigning.

“I’m here to announce that I have given my resignation to (County Executive) PJ Wendel, upon his request,” he said. “I’m thankful for all the opportunities I’ve had to work with all of you and to get the things done that we’ve done. I’m very proud of those efforts. I’ve valued my time so much here. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve grown a lot. I appreciate everything that everyone has done for me.”

During the meeting, Bentley didn’t say why Wendel has requested his resignation. “It’s just what needs to be done at this time,” he said.

After the meeting, this newspaper reached out to Wendel for a response. He slightly disputed with what Bentley said. “His resignation was offered and it was accepted,” he said.

Asked if he requested Bentley to resign, Wendel said he couldn’t disclose that. “It’s a personnel issue,” he said.

Bentley said he will stay on until Dec. 1 to help with the transition. “I’m just really grateful for the opportunity to serve,” he said.

Legislator Terry Niebel, R-Sheridan, thanked Bentley for the times he’s appeared before various county committees.

“You’ve always been forthright in your answers. If you didn’t know something you’ve always gotten back to us,” he said.

Audit and Control Committee Chairman Chuck Nazzaro agreed. “I want to thank you. I’ve enjoyed working with you in your years of service to the county. We’ve had many conversations. We keep each other honest,” he said. “Especially during the budget hearings, you always brought facts. You’re a smart individual. You’re not only an engineer, but you’ve also got a business background. I really appreciate all you’ve done. It’s been a pleasure working with you. I wish you the best in your future endeavors.”

Bentley was appointed to the position in 2018 by former County Executive George Borrello. Prior to accepting the position, Bentley worked for the Jamestown Urban Renewal Agency where he was the financial coordinator assisting with economic development projects.

His work experience includes both management and engineering positions while working for American Electric Power in Columbus, Ohio; GridAmerica in Cleveland, Ohio; San Diego Gas & Electric in San Diego, Calif.; and Eversource Energy in Hartford, Conn.

Bentley is a native of Panama and graduated from Panama Central School.

Starting at $2.99/week.
