City police acknowledge vandalism trend
Workers removed grafitti from the Memorial Park sign Tuesday, and the affair led to a police press release decrying recent vandalism in Dunkirk.
Randy Woodbury, who heads up the city Department of Public Works, said Tuesday his workers “carefully used anti-grafitti solution to remove vandal marks.” Someone sprayed black paint over the name of Mayor Wilfred Rosas on Friday or Saturday.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Dunkirk Police Department sent out a press release about damage done to city-owned property over the past two years. The police stated no arrests have been made in connection with the Memorial Park incident.
“Damage causes city workers to reallocate resources to make repairs which in turn wastes time and costs the taxpayers money,” the police release stated. “The Dunkirk Police Department takes these investigations serious and investigates them to the fullest extent and makes arrests in an effort to ensure voluntary compliance of park rules and regulations and to deter criminal behavior.”
The release offered summaries of recent incidents:

The police department’s press release continued, “We want to remind the community to obey park rules and if city property is damaged intentionally, we will investigate and make an arrest when applicable. We look forward to the installation of the citywide camera system that will help protect our city’s valuable assets.
“In the incidents listed that do not have an arrest, we are looking for any information the community can give us. Please contact the Dunkirk Police Department at 716-366-2266 or the confidential Tipline at 716-363-0313.”
