Fredonia OKs budget with tax increase

Fredonia quietly approved a 2022-23 budget with a 1.47% tax increase.

The Fredonia Village Board unanimously approved the spending plan with no debate. The budget covers the village’s business from June 1 to May 31, 2023.

The final budget passed by trustees had no significant changes from the original proposal by Mayor Douglas Essek.

The village property tax will rise to $36.18 per $1,000 of assessed property valuation. The sewer and water rates will not change.

The budget is on the village of Fredonia’s website, villageoffredoniany.com.

Appropriations in all three funds — general, water and sewer — rose mainly due to assumed increases in employee wages and insurance. Hikes of 5% for both general liability insurance and health insurance were included.

The 26-page budget document on Fredonia’s website lists salaries for Fredonia employees in 2022-23. According to that, the highest-paid employee will be Police Chief David Price. He’s set to make a base salary of $105,000. With benefits included, his total pay is $158,158.

A base salary of $100,000 is budgeted for the currently vacant fire chief position. With benefits, that goes up to $150,038.

A total of 21 village employees are set to make more than $100,000 in salary and benefits. That includes 11 police department workers and five people in the fire department.

Only two people spoke in the public hearing, both asking for more Barker Library and Museum funding.

Starting at $2.99/week.
