Sculpture to be placed at center of roundabout
The center of the roundabout at Routes 20 and 60 sits barren right now.
That’s changing soon.
A sculpture will be installed there, Pomfret Town Board member Ann Eckman said at a meeting last week.
It’s getting funded by the Fredonia Beaver Club, said Eckman, who announced in December she would lead an effort to beautify the roundabout. The stainless steel sculpture, by local artist Joe Sorci, is called “Unfurl.”
“It is a simple, yet elegant, piece,” said Eckman, who worked with fellow board member Brett Christy to arrange the project. A picture of the sculpture was not available at last week’s meeting.
“Conversations have been had with the county Highway Department so everything is compliant,” Eckman said. The sculpture can’t move or be reflective and must be installed atop breakaway bolts — all in the interest of motorists’ safety, she added.
A base for the sculpture still needs to be built, but Eckman said, “We’re hoping to have this in within the next couple months, maximum.”
There will be additional beautification work at the roundabout, involving landscaping, she added.
