Improvements eyed for Wheelock school

Originally discussed at their second meeting in March, the Fredonia school board approved a capital outlay project for its Wheelock school location. The amount for the project is set at $100,000, and has opened dialogue with the Fredonia School Board about how they see the future of Wheelock School.

“We gave our board members an opportunity to spend some time at Wheelock,” said Superintendent Dr. Brad Zilliox. “We had a lot of good dialogue and conversation about where we see the Wheelock school going in the future and what we see as its primary purpose. I think we’ll be revisiting conversations around that.”

Zilliox said that, in the meantime, there are needs there that have to be addressed, including securing the entrance, which involves repurposing a nearby classroom to a space where they could have eyes on who enters the district, similar to how the Fredonia school operates.

“This would be a definite upgrade as to where things currently stand,” he said.

Zilliox noted that the $100,000 project limit is open to including other things, such as the fire panel and paving, and the resolution does not lock the school into any one of these things.

“Those are ongoing conversations and dialogue between our admin team and the Board of Education to eventually land on what we absolutely believe are our priorities at this time,” he said.

The proposed capital outlay project passed unanimously through the board.

Starting at $2.99/week.
