Silver Creek Firework plan gets green light

SILVER CREEK — While the state of Silver Creek’s fireworks for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday was a bit up in the air, Silver Creek Mayor Jeff Hornburg said that the display will be able to be operated at the Hideaway Bay property. Hornburg said that after meeting with the property owner, Kevin Cullen, their display would be allowed.

“I’m thrilled we’ll be able to have our fireworks out there,” said Hornburg. “We have a lot of things scheduled for that day.”

The uncertainty around where the fireworks would be lit came from the fact that Silver Creek’s other option, the beach at Borrello Park, has lost most of its shore to the lake.

While the fireworks will be allowed at the Hideaway location this year, Hornburg said the village needs to prepare for not having access to that property next year.

“I would caution everybody that this is the last year for Hideaway,” he said. “I think we have to start working now to look out for the future.”

One of the places Hornburg has reached out to is Silver Creek Central School District, and Hornburg said Superintendent Todd Crandall is checking with his legal team to see if there was a possibility it could be held up there.

“It was the only other place I could think of that had an area big enough to do it,” said Hornburg. “Who knows?

Maybe in a year, our beach will return.”

There was also talk about building a makeshift barge to shoot the display off of, though that was quickly brought down when concerns over wind were brought up.

Silver Creek’s fireworks will be held on Sunday, July 3, and will have accompanying food vendors, as well as a performance by the Kokomo Time Band, as part of Silver Creek’s summer concert series. Should there be rain on July 3, the makeup date will be Tuesday, July 5. Fireworks typically start around 9 to 9:30 p.m., depending on when the sun sets.

Starting at $2.99/week.
