Official says Bay projects not following zoning code
SILVER CREEK — Rick Klisiewicz, president of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Hanover town Planning Board, came before the Hanover Town Board last week to address issues he feels need to be resolved in Sunset Bay and Hanford Bay in regard to building lot size. Klisiewicz said there are issues there regarding non-conforming buildings.
“Different facilities are being put up that are not approved by our zoning code,” said Klisiewicz. “A lot of people are trying to split up their lots.”
Klisiewicz suggested the Town Board put a six-month moratorium in place on all building projects in Sunset Bay and Hanford Bay, in order to put together a committee of fire safety, water department, the Highway department, himself, the zoning board and the town board to debate what they want happening there.
“Right now, there is a lot of chaos,” said Klisiewicz.
Hanover Town Supervisor Todd Johnson said that he is in favor of the moratorium, although no action could be taken on it Monday night, as town attorney Jeff Passafaro was not present to discuss the matter. Johnson said it could be addressed at their next meeting on Aug. 8.
“I’m speaking for myself, I would like to move forward with it, on your suggestion,” said Johnson.
Town Councilman Bernie Feldmann agreed with Johnson, saying, “We’ve seen more nightmares this spring and summer than we have in a long, long time with proposed building projects.”
This proposed moratorium did, however, meet opposition from the few residents in attendance at Monday’s meeting, feeling that property owners should not have their rights restricted, as long as they do things legally. Johnson agreed with this sentiment too, however the issues are coming from people who aren’t meeting the codes.
“The problem is, people aren’t meeting the codes and they’re just going out and doing it,” he said.
The next meeting of the Hanover Town Board will be Monday at 7:30 p.m.
