SILVER CREEK — After a public hearing with positive response from the community, the village has moved forward with seeking a grant to restore the old school building.

The Restore New York grant from Empire State Development is to restore the building, located at 60 Main St., for the purpose of a 47-unit assisted-living facility for senior citizens. The village remains hopeful for approval from the state level.

Silver Creek Mayor Jeff Hornburg said previously, “We’ve been working for years to get the building refurbished. … We’re willing to work with them any way we can.”

Also recently in the village, an agreement with FeedMore WNY has proven to be a successful partnership, as the mobile food pantry event surpassed expectations of the village. Silver Creek is planning to hold another mobile food pantry event on the fourth Tuesday of every month throughout the rest of a year-long agreement, including the next event Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The event currently is at the village municipal parking lot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., but if weather becomes an issue during the winter months, an alternate location will be chosen.

“Our first one we had in September, we had 150 boxes supplied to us and we went through it in 45 minutes,” said Hornburg. The food is free for everyone, while supplies last.

The village is also looking forward to Halloween events, with trick-or-treat hours set from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. The Kiwanis Club is holding a “trunk-or-treat” at the village park during trick-or-treat hours, and the village will also have candy to pass out at the dining car in the municipal parking lot during trick-or-treat hours.

Starting at $2.99/week.
