SUNY Fredonia sets timeline on cuts

SUNY Fredonia has released a timeline for its cost-cutting removal of 13 major programs.

It started on Dec. 6 when President Stephen Kolison notified the campus community of the cut proposals. The timeline states that the provost and deans met privately with department chairs and program coordinators to notify them of the plan.

From Dec. 13-19, the “provost and deans met with department chairs and program coordinators to discuss discontinuation proposals and share all relevant data,” the timeline states. The timeline was announced and added Dec. 20 to the so-called “Roadmap to Financial Stability” on SUNY Fredonia’s website.

Each program set for the chopping block can create and submit proposals to save themselves. They have until Jan. 19 to do so.

After that comes a couple months of discussion, analysis and committee meetings.

The University Senate Executive Committee and Planning and Budget Committee will review the proposals “and analyze and synthesize issues” from Jan. 22-Feb. 2, the timeline continues.

The Provost Council will consider the proposals, along with the Senate committees’ input, from Feb. 6-12. It will make recommendations on them.

University officials are also supposed to meet Feb. 9 “to discuss their analyses and syntheses of program proposals.”

Kolison and his Cabinet will review the Provost Council recommendations, and submit official program deactivation forms for analysis by yet more university committees, Feb. 13-16.

A special University Senate meeting to discuss deactivation proposals is set for Feb. 19. The executive leadership of the campus — Kolison and his Cabinet — will meet with committee chairs to review and discuss the proposals March 1.

More discussion about the program cuts is set for a March 4 University Senate meeting. On March 18, the Senate will “conclude discussions of program deactivation forms and continue discussions of proposals.” Kolison is to prepare a response to “Senate observations and analyses” March 19-20 and the provost will complete program deactivation forms for submission to the SUNY administration during that time.

The forms are to be submitted March 20. Final approval of proposed program deactivations is to be determined.

Starting at $2.99/week.
