Gowanda officially appoints new teachers

GOWANDA — Two new teachers have been appointed by the Gowanda Central School District, and both already have ties to the District.

At the latest Gowanda Board of Education meeting, the appointment of English Teacher Jason Riley and Special Education Teacher Corinne Hallin were each approved by the Board. Each appointment is on a four-year probationary basis.

Riley, who holds Professional Certification in English Grades 7-12, is a Gowanda resident with both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education from the University at Buffalo. Riley previously worked as a substitute teacher at Gowanda from 2016-2019, prior to leaving the District to become an English Teacher at the Pioneer Central School District, where he has worked from 2019 until now. His appointment at Gowanda will commence April 8.

Riley will fill the position held by Carol Propp in the Middle/High School English tenure area. Propp recently announced her intent to retire, and a letter of resignation was accepted by the Board. Riley was appointed following the Board’s exit to Executive Session to discuss the appointment of a particular person.

Hallin has been serving as a long-term substitute this school year while her Initial Certification in Special Education was pending approval from the New York State Education Department. Hallin is a Perrysburg resident with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education of Students with Disabilities from Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The District also appointed both Courtney Riker and Shelley Erwin to the role of Cleaner. Robert Robinson was appointed as a Substitute Cleaner/Custodian. Breven McMahon resigned from the role of Substitute School Monitor.

Juliana Grudzien was appointed as a Modified Track Coach, while Caine Luther was appointed as a Varsity Girls Lacrosse Assistant Coach. Selene Olson was approved as a Gowanda Middle School Volunteer.

The Board also approved the appointment of the law firm of Bond, Schoeneck and King, PLLC as the District’s special counsel for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year. Partners will be paid $289 per hour; Associates $269 per hour; Law Clerks $175 per hour; and Paralegals $150 per hour.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Anderson noted the pool repair project is still on track and the anticipated opening prior to next school year is within reach. Anderson also shared that the State Education Department approved the District’s submission for Smart Schools Bond Act funding.

The Board also approved member John Waterman Jr. for nomination to the Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Board of Cooperative Education Services.

Starting at $2.99/week.
