Following the American Flag Day weekend, the Cassadaga American Legion Post 1280 held the American Flag burning ceremony in the late afternoon of the 88 degrees temperature day. Post Commander Mitch Hoinski held a brief ceremony prior to the burning, explaining that these flags have been used and have served, and the proper method of disposal is by burning them. Chaplain Richard J. Haas gave the opening prayer, followed by the bugle being played in the far distance. The Color Guard lined up and gave a salute to the flags as they were burning. Tom Eddington announced that he had inspected the flags and that they are ready for burning. Dave Muscato and Mike Lehnen of the Cassadaga Volunteer Fire Department, with the department firetruck were present for the burning ceremony. As the flags were burning Chaplain Haas looked to the sky to give tribute to the late Karl Lawson, who always provided the place for the burning. The ceremony was attended by many.
