Fredonia eyes hike in dogs, cats allowed
Woof at this, Fredonia: Anyone with more than two dogs is currently breaking village code. However, that might be about to change.
The Fredonia Board of Trustees has scheduled a public hearing before its next meeting Sept. 3 over a proposed change in the code to allow four dogs per residence.
Cats are covered, too. Feline fanciers might want to scratch at Village Hall over the current law allowing only two cats per residence. However, like a cat attacking its prey, the new law jumps on that too: Four cats will now be allowed.
Trustees first mentioned the issue in June and made whiny puppy noises that the village’s limit on dogs and cats was so low.
A local law is necessary to change the code; the hearing is required because a law change is proposed.
Trustee Michelle Twichell took a catlike paw swipe at the proposal Friday. She said four dogs per household is fine for the town of Pomfret, where houses are generally further apart than in Fredonia, but won’t work in the village.
“Imagine 10 houses close together, and there could be 40 dogs,” she said, shuddering at the thought of the noisy barking.
Twichell said she would not vote for the local law due to the four-dog provision. She’s more comfortable with the hike in allowable cats, as they are quieter.
