Pelletter pleased with rides at Grape event
HANOVER — Lou Pelletter’s hard work appeared to pay off. The amusement rides at the Festival of Grapes were a hit.
Pelletter, the town supervisor, spoke highly of the recent Festival of Grapes, of which he played a major role in securing amusement rides for the weekend. Pelletter expressed optimism that the relationship the Town of Hanover and the Village of Silver Creek cultivated with the ride company, Amusements of America, will continue in future years with more rides to come.
“The ride vendor is a perfect fit for us,” Pelletter said. “I’ll be working with the Festival, the Village, and the ride vendor to add more rides next year.”
Pelletter was pleased with more than just the rides at the 57th annual tradition in the Village of Silver Creek, held Sept. 13-15.
“I was very happy with all of the events and activities. Everybody did a wonderful job,” Pelletter said. He also highlighted a strong turnout for the 40th anniversary celebration of the Silver Creek Bandstand.
Also at a recent meeting of the Town Board, Hanover Town Clerk Elizabeth VanCheri reported a successful e-waste recycling event that took place on Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Hanover Town Hall. Over 20,000 pounds of electronics were collected and disposed of at no cost to the Town.
A new historical marker will be purchased by Town Historian Vince Martonis to depict the significance of the Hanover Elm Tree. The site of the tree, which fell 90 years ago after standing for 400 years, was marked with a historical sign that was destroyed in a motor vehicle accident on Aug. 20 at the intersection of Route 39 and Hanover Street.
The famous Hanover elm tree was once the largest tree east of the Rocky Mountains. It won two contests for its size, which was 35 feet around its base. Seneca artist Sanford Plummer made the tree a subject with 33 historic paintings. A piece of the historic tree is preserved in the Hanover Town Hall in a display case.
Automobile insurance has covered $1,710 of the cost to replace the marker. The Town will contribute the remaining $400.
