Brocton reiterates winter parking restrictions

BROCTON — Winter parking restrictions in the Village of Brocton are now in effect, but some residents still have not corrected the issue. The Village is now taking another step to eliminate any excuse for noncompliance, as signs will be installed at every entrance to the Village detailing the rules that must be followed.

The Village Board recently authorized the purchase of nine signs at a cost not to exceed $1,700 to post at every entrance to the Village, detailing the dates and times on-street parking is restricted, as well as the Village’s ability to tow violators at the owner’s expense. The purchase will be funded by the maintenance of roads contractual account.

The purchase was proposed by Highway Superintendent Ken Becker. “I think that would be a heck of a good start to have all this posted,” Becker said. “… Posting it takes some of the peoples’ defense away that they didn’t know.”

Warning notices have been issued in the past, but more than a year after putting a law in place and a whole year of discussion since has led the Village to become less patient with continuous offenders.

The matter is an issue of safety for the Highway Department during winter months when plowing snow. Vehicles parked on Village streets make it much more difficult for the Highway Department to plow the roads and also avoid damaging vehicles.

Village Trustee Bryan Woleben said, “Help the crews help you, and help us, keep the roads and sidewalks clear.”

In other Village business, as the Central Avenue water project nears completion, several change orders were approved by the Village Board. A change order representing a $68,737 decrease in overall project costs, an increase of $18,000 for construction observation services, and an increase of $9,000 related to design services to connect the water line were all approved by the Board. With the changes, the Village saved more than $40,000 overall, which kept the project within the budgeted costs associated with the project.

Becker commended S. St. George Enterprises for the construction work of the project. “They were very good, I have nothing bad to say,” Becker said.

The next meeting of the Brocton Village Board is set for Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Village Hall.

Starting at $2.99/week.
