Screening features Gowanda teacher
“She Carries It Forward,” a documentary spotlighting Lottie Gill, a Haudenosaunee Native woman, educator at Gowanda Central School District and lacrosse coach, premieres Monday in the auditorium at Gowanda High and the public is invited.
Gill, who works at Gowanda Middle School, is a cultural leader and global lacrosse competitor, embodying the resilience of Indigenous women.
This event is an opportunity to explore culture and history during Native American Heritage Month, while engaging in meaningful conversations about the future of Indigenous education. Educators, community members, and leaders will engage in discussions on Native American perspectives and educational opportunities.
The community is invited to be part of this free and special evening that includes a welcome from 5:30-5:45 p.m.; film screening: 5:45-6:10 p.m.; expert panel/Q&A: 6:10-6:40 p.m.; refreshments & networking: 6:40 p.m.
The expert panel will offer insights into the work of promoting Indigenous education and highlighting future opportunities for students.
It will offer perspectives on the cultural significance of lacrosse, the challenges and opportunities for Native students, and the importance of honoring heritage via education.
Presented by a tri-district initiative “Ogwe’o:weh Perspectives,” which includes Gowanda, Lake Shore and Silver Creek central school districts, along with Belouga, the purpose of this event is to deepen the understanding of Indigenous culture and inspire future educational pathways that honor Native American heritage.
