Some silent on call for city cuts
Dunkirk Councilperson-at-large Nick Weiser said this week that not all city departments have responded to a request to find more items to cut from the 2025 budget.
Weiser told the Common Council’s Finance Committee, which he chairs, that all council members responded to his request for suggestions. However, only “some” city departments did. Weiser did not name the departments that failed to do so.
Weiser was looking for 10% cuts in each department, as council tries to hack down the approximately 108% tax hike proposed in Mayor Kate Wdowiasz’s budget.
He said the council “wanted to give department heads an opportunity to aid in that process.” Weiser vowed to follow up with department heads who did not respond to the request for cut suggestions.
Weiser will now combine the lists of suggestions into one document for his fellow council members to mull over. After a few days of doing so, he plans one more budget workshop so the council can figure out a final list of changes to Wdowiasz’s budget.
“I don’t know exactly the timeline of it because I haven’t had a chance to connect with all members of council,” Weiser said.
The council must pass the 2025 budget by Dec. 15.
