For the second time in nearly a month, a city of Dunkirk chief will be retiring.

In a news release issued Tuesday, the Dunkirk Fire Department announced that Fire Chief Michael Edwards will retire.

On Friday Dec. 27, Edwards will work last shift before starting his retirement. At 4 p.m. at Fire Headquarters 311 Eagle St., “the Fire Department will host a short ceremony before walking Edwards out and onto retirement. The public is welcome to attend,” the release noted.

Edwards joined the Dunkirk Fire Department as a volunteer in 1985 and has served two separate terms as chief of the department.

After being appointed as a career firefighter, Edwards has held the rank of firefighter, fire lieutenant and fire captain also serving as a Public Safety Officer.

Edwards was appointed to the position by Dunkirk Common Council in March 2015.

In November, David Ortolano announced his retirement as police chief. It was a position he had held since 2006.
