After a successful first year with a student representative on the Fredonia Board of Education last school year, the District is adding to the new tradition this year with a pair of new faces.

Anne Creeley was appointed as the primary student representative for the Fredonia Board of Education at its most recent meeting. Creeley, a varsity girls basketball player, looks at the position as a way to improve her leadership skills and represent the perspective of her peers on the Board. Creeley is also a member of the Unified Club and the National Honor Society.

“I’m very excited for this opportunity and learning experience. I can’t wait,” Creeley said.

Creeley fills the role that was held by Lacey Drennen last year as the District’s first student representative. This year, in an effort to better represent the student voice at every meeting, as well as covering for scheduling conflicts, the District also selected an alternate representative, Sam Garaas-Johnson.

Garaas-Johnson is an aspiring art teacher who hopes that serving on the Board will provide a better understanding of how school districts operate. Garaas-Johnson is a member of the Art Honor Society, the Game Club, GSA, Interact Club, and also assists with the graphics on the school’s morning announcements.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Zilliox and Board of Education President Steve Johnston both thanked the student representatives for their interest in joining the Board. “We’re excited to have you join the table. … It’s not easy, but it’s very rewarding,” Johnston said.

Later in the meeting, the District also highlighted that nearly $10,000 has been raised by Fredonia students and staff to support the Polar Plunge, an annual event to benefit Special Olympics.

The next meeting of the Fredonia Board of Education is Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. Two days later, Dec. 12, is the District’s proposed Capital Project vote.

Starting at $2.99/week.
