Sheridan garage fire extinguished Monday night
SHERIDAN — Despite rough weather conditions, several departments worked quickly to save a Sheridan home Monday night from what could have been a devastating fire.
Monday night, at approximately 10, a garage fire in Sheridan required a call for mutual aid from a handful of local fire departments and emergency medical services providers.
According to the Forestville Fire Department, one of 10 departments and/or agencies to respond, the garage of a home was “fully involved” upon arrival. However, thanks to the quick actions of first responders, the fire was stopped from burning down the adjacent home. The fire was extinguished in the garage.
Responding to the blaze were the following departments: Sheridan, Forestville, Silver Creek, Sunset Bay, East Town of Dunkirk, West Town of Dunkirk, Hanover Center, as well as the Chautauqua County Emergency Services, the County Fire Investigation, and the County Sheriff’s Office.
Following the investigation, it was determined that a damaged and unmaintained propane heater exhaust pipe became compromised and overheated, leading to the structure fire.
No injuries were reported.
The blaze capped a busy day for several of the departments involved, as Forestville, Sheridan, Sunset Bay and the Chautauqua County Emergency Services were among the many departments to offer mutual aid during a barn collapse in Arkwright on Monday. While several cows in the barn were killed and many more were trapped upon the collapse of the roof, crews worked throughout the day to free the trapped livestock.
Officials are urging area farmers to assess the condition of barns and outbuildings for signs of stress or damage as heavy snowfall continues to impact the region.
