Sorcery of ‘Tempest’ coming to Silver Creek

Twenty-four Silver Creek students in grade seven to 12 take part in the performance.

Silver Creek High School presents William Shakespeare’s, “The Tempest,” on Jan. 17 and 18.

Based on what is considered one of Shakespeare’s last plays, “The Tempest” features a shipwreck, a sorcerer’s plot for revenge, love at first sign, magical spirits and much more.

“No one does a play like Shakespeare. The lead up to the end is chaotic in the best way,” eighth-grader Joe Ziegler, who plays Gonzalo, said.

Considered a comedy, but also containing elements of a tragedy and romance, “The Tempest” centers Prospero, the exiled Duchess of Milan and a sorcerer as he creates a violent storm that strands the king of Naples, Prospero’s treacherous brother and others on this enchanted island. Prospero lives on the island with his daughter, Miranda and his servants, a spirit named Ariel and a witch’s son, Caliban.

As the castaways appear on shore in different groups, hijinks ensue. Who will fall in love, who will plot murder and who will come out on top?

“The play has some dark themes, but it’s a comedy at its heart. I love playing Stephano alongside Kolby (Caliban) and Auggie (Trinculo).

We have some real laughs in our scenes, and I think audiences will love laughing along with us!” Senior Ella Austin said.

The performance features 24 Silver Creek students in grade seven to 12 as cast, pit band, and stage crew and student director, Irelynd Henry.
