State grant will upgrade Sheridan facility

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Highway Department will soon be enjoying an updated facility thanks to a state grant.

The Town of Sheridan received a $50,000 grant from the Dormitory Authority State of New York and Municipalities to replace the doors and windows of the existing Highway Department building. The Town estimates the total cost of the project to be $51,900, with the remaining balance to be covered by the Town Highway Department’s general operating budget.

The Town Board authorized the hiring of an engineering firm to finalize plans and bid documents. The bids will be opened by 2 p.m. on Feb. 4. The Town Board will then review the bids and make a decision, likely at the next regular meeting of the Town Board.

AMD Environmental Inc. will provide a PCB and asbestos test of the windows and doors at the Highway Department building at a cost of $1,400. The Town has also entered into a contract with J.F. Consulting Services from Jan. 1 through Sept. 30 at a rate of $65 per hour for grant writing services as necessary for the project.

The Town also entered into a contract with Municipal Solutions to assist with the formation of Water District 4.

The Town of Sheridan also set the 2025 salaries for elected officials at its recent meeting. Supervisor Tom Wik will receive $8,736, while the Town Council members will each earn $3,822. Highway Superintendent Jeff Feinen receives a salary of $60,000, while Town Clerk Rebecca Schafer earns a salary of $30,000. Shafer earns an additional $2,400 as Tax Collector. Town Justices Lydia Romer and Jonathan Szumigala earn $15,288 each. James Crowell is the Town’s Code Enforcement Officer and Building Inspector at $18,000 for the year 2025.

Richard Feinen was named as the Town’s Deputy Supervisor. Dana Mleczko was named Deputy Town Clerk and Deputy Tax Collector. John Magierski was named Deputy Highway Superintendent. Romaine Hohenstein, Henry Hoisington, and Paul DeMarco will serve on the Board of Assessment Review. Eric Gentry, Paul Wallenhorst, Brian Aldrich, John Yerico, Sr., and Steven Roach will serve on the Planning and Zoning Board.

The Town is seeking a new Court Clerk and Deputy Court Clerk after the resignation of Court Clerk Eva Gadewoltz and her appointed deputy, Ashley Olrogg. The Town will be reviewing applications in the coming weeks.

The Town Justice Court received 2,236 vehicle and traffic cases in 2024, along with 62 penal law cases, four agriculture and markets law cases, and three environmental conservation law cases in the year. In total, $307,256 was collected and turned over for distribution. Just in the month of December, the Justice Court received 105 vehicle and traffic cases and 10 penal law cases. A total of $20,283 was turned over for distribution in December.

The Town Clerk’s office also collected $123.50 in December, with $11 sent to the State Department of Agriculture and Markets for dog licenses. Code Enforcement Officer James Crowell collected $260 in December, which included six inspections on construction, three building permit applications, one complaint investigation and one notice of violation.

The Sheridan Town Board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Sheridan Community Center. A monthly workshop meeting is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month, also at 7 p.m. at the Sheridan Community Center. The next regular meeting of the Town Board is Wednesday, Feb. 12.
