Chautauqua Lake ensemble making community ‘connection’

The talented musicians of Chautauqua Lake’s Select Ensemble have been making the most of opportunities to perform outside the school setting, entertaining new audiences and strengthening community ties.

For the third consecutive year, the ensemble kicked off the Holidays at the Lodge event at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute.

This special performance not only allowed the group to showcase their talents to a fresh audience but also introduced attendees to a unique venue. Music teacher Jennifer Davis is particularly fond of the event for its ability to push students out of their comfort zones while fostering important community connections.

“What’s exciting about these performances is that they take the students beyond the typical classroom and concert setting,” said Davis. “It gives them the chance to interact with the community in new and meaningful ways.”

In addition to the Holidays at the Lodge performance, the ensemble was invited to showcase their musical skills at two other local music venues. Just a short distance from the school, the group performed at She Sings Cafe, Bar and Restaurant, after owner Rebecca Magnusson extended an invitation to Davis at the start of the school year. Together, they arranged a December performance that coincided with the ensemble’s preparation for their winter concert. The event, which also included cookie decorating, was well-received by the community.

“We were thrilled to be part of such a fun and engaging event,” said Davis. “The connection between our students and the audience was heartwarming.”

The ensemble also performed at Music for Your Mouth restaurant in Mayville. This event was hosted by Karen Simmons who offered a welcoming atmosphere that made the performance even more memorable for the students and the audience alike.

Each of the ensemble’s performances featured a mix of full ensemble pieces, vocal solos, instrumental solos, and duets. While many selections celebrated the holiday season, the diverse repertoire also included non-seasonal pieces, providing something for everyone to enjoy.

Another highlight of the season was the ensemble’s visit to the Senior Center in Stow. Community member Sue Harper, a former Chautauqua Lake staff member and avid music supporter, invited the group back to perform this year.

Under the direction of music teachers Jennifer Davis and McLain Hinkler, with support from retired educator Rick Lundquist, the CLCS Select Ensemble’s community performances have become a powerful reminder of music’s ability to bring people together. These performances not only provide valuable experience for the students but also give back to local businesses and community members.
