MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County is one of 10 counties across the United States that has been provided free Ring a Video Doorbell or a Stick-Up Cams to give to older adult residents.

The announcement was made Friday by Dana Corwin, county Offices for Aging Services director.

“Chautauqua County is committed to leveraging technology to enhance the safety and well-being of our older residents,” she said during a news conference in Mayville. “This partnership with USAging and Ring aligns with our mission to help seniors live independently and safely in their homes. We’re excited to be part of this innovative program and provide this invaluable resource to those who need it most.”

Eligible participants must be 60 years or older, reside in Chautauqua County, have access to Wi-Fi, a smartphone and an email address. Individuals must also not currently have a Ring Camera.

There are 500 devices available total for county residents.

Caregivers of older adults may also apply.

Bridgette Paoletta with NY Connects will be overseeing the distribution. “This is linking individuals who may need some extra services and have that security as well,” she said.

Paoletta noted that NY Connects can serve as a first stop for seniors looking for services. “When you’re looking for that support, whether it’s finding a service, applying for a program that’s local in the area, or understanding your benefits, there are many benefits in Chautauqua County, through Social Services or Mental Health. There’s so many programs out there that everybody is not aware of and you can contact NY Connects and they can give you a link, a referral, or maybe a little bit of information so you know the first step to go,” she said.

Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone also sees value for older adults having a Ring camera. “Technology like Ring plays a critical role in promoting public safety and preventing crimes of opportunity. By equipping older adults with these devices, we’re helping them remain vigilant and secure in their homes,” he said.

County Executive PJ Wendel also praised the program. “Our heroes are our parents, our grandparents, and now it’s time to take care of them. Ring doorbells have stopped crime across the country and what better way to implement new technology than with our senior adults and aging adults so they can stay and live at home,” he said.

Ring will provide technology training and installation training to ensure ease of use for participants. Devices will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
