Fredonia eyes Friday for boil order lifting

Fredonia’s boil water order should expire by Friday, with the problem that caused it fixed and testing underway to ensure quality, according to village officials.

A post on Fredonia’s Facebook page Thursday morning stated that the second of two water tests necessary for the lifting of the order, has been conducted. The village was awaiting results.

Luis Fred, chief operator at the water treatment plant, said a hose rupture on Monday led to the boil order. “Everything has been replaced and is working properly,” and the goal is to get the order lifted by Friday, he said.

Fred spoke at a Wednesday evening Board of Trustees meeting. Trustee Nicole Siracuse reported, “From my conversations with Luis it seems like it’s probably a manufacturing issue with a decrease in the quality of the product we’ve been getting. Although they say that it’s still the same product, it’s causing us to corrode through these hoses far quicker than we previously have been. He did look into other manufacturers and hopefully that will remedy that and keep us from blowing through these hoses.”

Siracuse then criticized critics of the village government.

“I understand your frustration every time there is an order. We are also under the same order, we are not immune, we are also village residents,” she said, referring to her fellow trustees. “So attacking board members with comments such as ‘poor excuse for a public servant’ and that we’re ‘brain dead,’ are unhelpful and unnecessary. If you think you can do better — There’s gonna be two seats up for election this year, have at it. Getting involved is what makes a difference, not making comments on social media.”

Meanwhile, late Thursday morning Department of Public Works crews were at the site of a water main break on Burnett Drive. On its Facebook page, the village said the incident was affecting the water making it a yellow shade due to dirt getting into the lines.

Starting at $2.99/week.
