Group headed back to help with hurricane recovery work

Submitted Photos Kevin Weaver, Director of Missions of Helping Hands, is pictured volunteering in North Carolina. Also pictured in the background is Karen Spruce from Greensboro, NC. The other photos show scenes of devastation by last fall’s hurricane.

An organization that went down south a couple of times last fall to help communities recover from Hurricane Helene is heading back and is looking for donations.

“Missions of Helping Hands has their third trip planned for North Carolina to help with rebuilding as many families are still living in tents with no heat or electricity,” explained Kevin Weaver of Brocton.

Joining Weaver with Missions of Helping Hands will be Joe Siragusa, Paul Wandel of Fredonia, and Jack Herman of Leon. Once they get to North Carolina they will be meeting up with past team members, totaling 10 people, and working with other groups.

Right after the hurricane hit, Weaver went by himself to do recovery work. Then the week of Thanksgiving he returned with his long-time friend, now retired coworker Jack Herman. They cleared trees and placed campers for families to live in.

Weaver said for this next trip they will be leaving Easter Sunday morning, April 20, and stay through April 26 for a week-long hard work of rebuilding homes, laying flooring, insulation, drywall, electrical, plumbing, and more.

“We usually are able to accomplish five to 10 homes in five days and that’s our goal this trip,” Weaver said. “We all chip in our own money to cover travel expenses and rely on donations from local churches and communities for building supplies and materials.”

If people would like to donate towards the trip they can make checks out to Missions of Helping Hands and mail them to 8345 Rt. 380, Brocton, NY 14716 or they can take them to Hair Affair Salon at 85 Cushing Street Fredonia and drop them off.

Missions of Helping Hands would like to give a thank you to the local community, Harvest Chapel Free Methodist Church, Darla Johnson, Kristine Waite Wojtkowiak, Michael Seeley Foundation, and Merj Fleet Repair for their continuing support and help in making the trips possible.

Missions of Helping Hands has been doing these types of trips since 2015 across the country, helping communities recover following natural disasters.

Starting at $2.99/week.
