Tarp Skunks look to honor Silver Creek legend

SILVER CREEK — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks are looking to honor one of the area’s greatest baseball stars of the past.
Silver Creek Mayor Jeff Hornburg was recently approached about scheduling a night at Jamestown’s Diethrick Park to honor the legacy of Howard Ehmke.
Born in 1894, Ehmke, a Silver Creek native, spent 15 years in Major League Baseball from 1915-1930. He won the 1929 World Series as the Game 1 starter of the series for the Philadelphia Athletics. Ehmke won 166 games and registered more than 1,000 strikeouts in his career. He also threw a no-hitter on Sept. 7, 1923.
After retiring from baseball, Ehmke started a company that made tarps to protect baseball diamonds from the rain. The Tarp Skunks want to honor Ehmke’s legacy with a night to teach the community about the local baseball history right here in Chautauqua County.
“We are going to be looking into that for the near future to see if we can make something happen,” Hornburg said.
In other Village news, a public hearing on the tentative budget is scheduled for April 7 at 7 p.m., at the onset of the next regular meeting of the Village Board.
The Village Board also approved the application of Benjamin Wassell for membership to the Silver Creek Fire Department. Samantha Wicks and Diane Neal were both approved for membership to the Silver Creek Fire Auxiliary.
An agreement with Munibit for the design of an updated Village of Silver Creek website and notification system was also approved, as was a compensation proposal from the State Department of Transportation for improvements to crosswalks and handicap accessibility at various points throughout the Village.
The Village Board also stressed to residents that the village is under a burn ban through May 14 as mandated by the State Department of Environmental Conservation.
The Village recently addressed a water main break on Robert Drive, which occurred on a Sunday morning. Hornburg estimated the crew worked nine hours to address the issue. “My hat goes off to them for giving up a Sunday to do something like that,” Hornburg said.
The next Mobile Food Pantry event, sponsored by the Silver Creek Food Pantry, the Village of Silver Creek, and Feedmore WNY, will be on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the village municipal parking lot. The event is free of charge to residents of Silver Creek and other nearby communities.
