City weighs Main Street closing

The Dunkirk Common Council wants more city officials to weigh in on a proposed, temporary road closure for part of Main Street.
Wells Enterprises seeks to close the stretch from Marsden to Newton streets that is directly adjacent to its plant. The company is continuing a large expansion of the ice cream factory, and wants the street closed until next April to help with that.
“After looking at it closely, it seems like it’s the best option,” Michael Metzger, Wells’ project engineer, told the council Tuesday. “We’re going to have a large staging area across the street with mobilization and equipment and people back and forth. It just seems to make sense.”
Metzger said Wells is working on “proper, safe, least inconvenient detours available” with the city Department of Public Works.
“I want the Police Chief and the Fire Chief involved,” said Councilman James Stoyle.
Councilwoman Nancy Nichols wondered, “To approve this request without seeing a plan of attack, is that the correct way of doing things? …We’re OK’ing something that we don’t know we’re OK’ing.”
Councilman-at-Large Nick Weiser replied that was why the council was referring the request to DPW, the police and fire departments. The council did so by a 4-0 vote, with Councilwoman Abby Zatorski absent.
