Fredonia OKs extra $1,500 for employee
A village of Fredonia employee has a little more jingle in his pocket, thanks to a donation.
The village Board of Trustees approved, by a 4-1 vote, $1,500 for public access channel head Chip Riewaldt. The money is intended to compensate Riewaldt for the time he spent moving the station’s headquarters last year, after the police department took over his old space for a new evidence room.
The $1,500 comes from a $20,000 donation for the new evidence room. Trustee Michelle Twichell said Trish Timko made the donation.
Trustee Nicole Siracuse was the “no” voter. She was worried that using a donation to essentially compensate for overtime sets a bad precedent.
“This donation has nothing to do with how anyone else is paid,” Twichell replied. “This person who donated the money told me I could use it for whatever costs would be involved in moving the station, and that cost happens to be Chip’s time spent in relocating the station.”
Siracuse thought it might encourage anyone who works more than 40 hours a week to seek more money. “There’s no comparison to that,” Twichell replied.
“To me. it doesn’t matter where the money is coming from,” Siracuse countered. “To me, it just appears a department head worked more than they typically do, and is now asking for compensation on that.”
