HANOVER — A widespread power outage in the town of Hanover was caused by a wind storm late Wednesday afternoon.
Strong winds caused a tree to fall onto a power line on Routes 5 and 20 near Save A Lot that left many residences and businesses without power. According to one source, an electrical current caused the road to catch fire. At the time of the incident, the responding crew said it could be up to four hours until the road would be reopened.
The area is also undergoing construction due to the Routes 5 and 20 lane reduction project by the Department of Transportation. It is unclear what if any damage has been done to that ongoing project.
Frosty Treat, an ice cream shop along Routes 5 and 20 near the fire, announced Thursday morning that it will be “closed until further notice” due to the damage sustained by its ice cream machines stemming from the power surge. More information will be made available at a later date on the Frosty Treat Facebook page.
The town of Hanover was not the only area impacted heavily by the strong winds. While gusts reached 47 mph in Forestville at 5:22 p.m., even stronger winds struck Fredonia, where gusts reached 59 miles per hour at 5:40 p.m.
In Fredonia, a tree was downed on Route 20 near Adams Road, west of the village. The tree was observed completely blocking the road at 5:39 p.m., while gusts were still registered at 45 miles per hour in the village as of 6 p.m.
The Dunkirk airport registered gusts of 53 miles per hour at 5:52 p.m., Wednesday.
