Pioneer Cemetery wall work finished

OBSERVER Photo by M.J. Stafford A new wall at Pioneer Cemetery in Fredonia was completed earlier this week.

The new wall at Pomfret’s Pioneer Cemetery is complete.

N Mathews Enterprises out of Westfield finished the work earlier this week. The sidewalk in front of the cemetery, on Main Street in the village of Fredonia, has reopened. Straw is down between the sidewalk and the shoulder of the road to help regrow grass torn up by the workers’ equipment.

N Mathews tore out the old wall in November and worked throughout the winter on the new barrier. It’s made of natural stone and was intended to look similar to the previous, decades-old wall.

Deputy Town Supervisor Ann Eckman said at the April town board meeting she was pleased with the new wall. She offered another update regarding the cemetery and neighboring Forest Hill Cemetery, also overseen by the town.

She said arborists Ecos Cooperative Inc. have completed an assessment of the trees in the two cemeteries and will present recommendations to the town soon.

Most of the hemlocks in Forest Hill are diseased but Ecos thinks many can be saved, Eckman said. A treatment is set to be applied to some of the trees on April 19. Eckman thinks a Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation endowment fund for the town cemeteries can reimburse Pomfret for the cost of saving 40 trees, estimated at $3,600.

Starting at $2.99/week.
