Multiple animals died and three of eight occupants received medical attention after an early morning fire Tuesday in the city of Dunkirk.
City firefighters report at 2:12 a.m., they were dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 509 Canary St. Upon arrival, the correct address was determined to be 49 W. Fifth St. and crews found fire venting from the first-floor windows on the West Fifth Street and Canary Street side of the two-and-a-half story, single family house.
Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack using multiple hose lines. However, due to the amount of initial manpower and the intensity of the fire, crews had to reposition and fight the fire from the exterior. The building was extensively damaged as a result of the fire. The neighboring house at 47 W. Fifth St. also suffered minor damage.
It took approximately 40 firefighters from the city, Fredonia, East Town of Dunkirk, Sheridan and Bay Creek Fire District over 2 1/2 hours to bring the fire under control. In addition to the mutual aid departments, the City of Dunkirk Fire Department was assisted by the Dunkirk Police Department, Alstar EMS, Chautauqua County EMS, Chautauqua County Office of Emergency Services, National Grid, National Fuel, City of Dunkirk Code Enforcement and City of Dunkirk Public Works & Water Department.
The occupants are being assisted by the Red Cross. City and Chautauqua County Fire Investigators determined the cause of the fire as electrical in nature.
