Joy I. Jones

Joy I. Jones, formerly of Fredonia, New York, died Aug. 6, 2017, following a period of declining health. At the time of her death, Joy was comforted by the presence of her nephews, nieces and cousins. She had been a resident of the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk, N.Y., and also the WCA Home of Fredonia, N.Y.

Joy was born June 28, 1933 in Cherry Creek, N.Y., to the late Leon and Helen (Curtis) Jones. She was 84 years of age.

She graduated from Fredonia High School and the Jamestown Practical School of Nursing, where she earned an LPN degree. After successfully passing her NYS Nursing Boards, Joy was employed at both J.N. Adams Hospital in Perrysburg, N.Y., and Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, N.Y., until her retirement in 1988.

On July 12, 1979, Joy married Charles Jones, but sadly he was killed in a car accident only months after they were married.

Many years ago, she loved riding horses with the Dusty Boots Horse Club in the Gowanda area. Her horse was named Cheyenne. She rode with her cousins in the Curtis family. Joy enjoyed living in her home in the woods for many years in Dayton, N.Y., which she shared with her beloved German Shepherd, Princess. Joy truly loved animals, her pets especially, Princess and Cheyenne, were very special to her and gave her a deep, fulfilling depth of love.

After retirement, she moved to the Fredonia area into a home on East Main Street. She had been a member of the Mormon Church in Fredonia, N.Y. Due to eye complications from diabetes, Joy moved to the WCA Home and eventually to the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she resided until her passing. Both homes gave her exceptional and loving care.

In addition to her family, friends and pets, Joy especially enjoyed watching scifi, shark thrillers and a wide variety of cowboy movies.

Joy is survived by her brother, Dan L. Jones of Florida; a niece, Frandal (John) Marsh of Fredonia, N.Y.; and a nephew, Frank (Sue) Mizwa III, of Dunkirk, N.Y. Also survived by great nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, LaDeel (Frank) Mizwa and close cousins and many friends who loved her.

Joy’s Funeral Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017 at the FANTAUZZI FUNERAL HOME, 82 East Main St., Fredonia, N.Y. at noon, with the Rev. D. Carlson officiating.
