Walter L. Postell Sr.
Walter L. Postell Sr., 83, of Dunkirk died Thursday morning (Dec. 21, 2017) at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa. following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 2, 1934 in Marshallville, GA, the son of the late James and Mammie (Hill) Postell. He had been employed as a molder for the Dunkirk Radiator Corporation.
A resident of Dunkirk since 1956, Mr. Postell was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Dunkirk, where he served as a deacon and gospel singer.
Walter enjoyed gardening, grilling with his famous barbecue sauce, spending time outdoors, and watching western cowboy movies. But most of all he enjoyed watching his grandchildren play in the yard and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 63 years, Lizzie M. (Hooten) Postell, whom he married Oct. 17, 1954; two sons, Walter L. Postell Jr. and James J. (Marilyn) Postell, both of Dunkirk; three daughters, Mildred (Jayffers) Johnson of Erie, Pa., Joan (Leon) Schrantz of Dunkirk, and Diane (Esmond) Colvin of Ashtabula, OH; two brothers, Pastor James Postell and Willie (Brenda) Postell, both of Yonkers, NY; three sisters, Mandy Walker of Warner Robins, GA, and Laura Postell and Mary Postell, both of Marshallville, GA; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Diane Postell; four brothers, Johnny Postell, Horace Postell, Charlie Postell, and Lynn “Buddy” Postell; and three sisters, Lorene Marks, Mammie Postell, and Eve Mae Postell-Hooten.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock in Friendship Baptist Church, 18 East Second St., Dunkirk. Pastor Early G. Waller will officiate. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 12, noon to 1 p.m., one hour prior to the service in church. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sheridan, NY. Arrangements are by the McGrawKowal Funeral Home.
