Stephen Warner

Stephen Douglas Warner passed away peacefully with family by his side at 2 am on Saturday, March 30, 2019.

Stephen was born on October 10, 1939 and grew up in Far Rockaway, New York. He had two siblings. Stephen enlisted in ROTC in July 1962 and served as Captain in the Army 207th. He worked in counter intelligence in West Germany during the Vietnam War. He spoke German and Russian. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged in July 1968.

Stephen married Linda in 1965 and they had three children, Christopher (Jennifer Nalbone) of Forestville,, Michael (Michelle Bonesho) of San Francisco, CA and Sarah of Boulder, CO. They had four grandchildren, Henry, Charlie Warmer, Sophie and Felix Hardy.

Stephen graduated from Dickinson College, completed a doctorate in American Literature from Indiana University and taught at SUNY/Fredonia NY for 35 years. He truly enjoyed teaching and participating in the academic community. He was awarded 3 Fulbright Scholarships to teach at universities in Romania, Berlin and Lithuania. He retired at age 60.

Stephen was a man of many interests and great curiosity about the world. He loved to read, was interested in history and music, especially early old time music. He played the banjo and concertina for over 30 years with the Newton Street Irregulars. He was a collector and enjoyed antiques. He also enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He used to be a fix-it-man for his neighbors and got paid with pie.
