Dr. Edward S. Konwinski

Born Oct. 23, 1924, in Dunkirk, N.Y., he was a son of the late S. Edward and Hattie (Stefaniak) Konwinski.

On March 29, 1948 ,in St. Mary’s Church in Dunkirk, N.Y., he married Doris (Ward) Konwinski, who predeceased him on Sept. 4, 2001.

Dr. Konwinski was a 1942 graduate of Dunkirk High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army with the 156th Field Artillery Battalion of the 44th Infantry Division in France, Germany, and Austria. He earned four battle stars and obtained the rank of sergeant.

He graduated from the New York College of Medicine at Syracuse in 1952. Upon obtaining his medical degree, he served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, doing his internship and general surgical residency at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco. He then served as a surgeon at the US Army Hospital at Croix Chapeau in LaRochelle France and as chief of the General Surgical Section at the U.S. Army Hospital in Landstuhl Germany. He attained the rank of major in the regular Army.

Dr. Konwinski entered private practice in Bradford in 1962 and was a partner at Surgical Associates of Bradford. He was certified by the American Board of General Surgery and was named a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, one of the highest honors of his profession. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps with the rank of colonel.

He served on the board of directors at Bradford Hospital and Bradford Regional Medical Center. He was a member and past president of the Bradford Exchange Club, and of the Bradford Chapter of the American Cancer Society and a member of the Bradford Club. A student of the mechanics of the golf swing, he was a member of the Pennhills Club, one of his favorite places in the world. He volunteered at the Friendship Table and with Meals on Wheels.

He was a long-time member of St. Bernard Church, serving as president of the Parish Council, lector, and chair of the Care and Concern Committee, and was one of the co-founders of the parish’s Divine Mercy Chapel.

Surviving are three sons: Edward (Jill) Konwinski of Bradford, Robert (Sharon) Konwinski of West Newton Pa., and Donald Konwinski of Bradford; one daughter, Laurie Konwinski (Todd Saddler) of Ithaca N.Y.; four grandchildren: Edward R. Konwinski Jr., Michele (Dan) Donovan, Joseph Konwinski (Rokhsanna Sadeghi) and Kenny Konwinski; eight great-grandchildren: Daniel, Elijah, Hattie and Ruby Donovan, and Theodora, Eloise, Clement and Julian Konwinski; extended family, Chad (Tanya) Hayden and children: Cade, Drake and Elisa and Michele Hayden and children: Logan, Derek and Lucas; and several beloved nieces and nephews. Along with his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his siblings: Clement Konwinski, Mildred Rutkowski, Henrietta Borowski, Angeline Anderson and Richard Konwinski.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, from 4-7 p.m., in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc. 372 East Main Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Wednesday in St. Bernard Church with the Rev. Raymond Gramata, pastor, as Celebrant. Masks and social distancing will be required at both gatherings, in keeping with Dr. Konwinski’s legacy as a man of science who dedicated his life to caring for other people.

Military honors by members of the U.S. Army and by members of the American Legion Post 108 Honor Guard will be accorded at St. Bernard Cemetery following the mass.
