Michael J. “MB” Burke, 69, of Penfield, N.Y., formerly of Dunkirk, died Friday morning (Sept. 24, 2021) at Highland Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., following a brief battle with cancer.

He was born April 12, 1952, the son of the late William E. and Maude B. (Buttle) Burke.

A native of Dunkirk, Michael was a graduate of Cardinal Mindszenty High School, class of 1971, where he excelled in football. A tenacious right tackle, he played under the tutelage of legendary Hall of Fame coach Bob Muscato. Michael was named to the All-Catholic Team in the Smith Division of the Monsignor Martin Football league (1970). He earned his associates in accounting from SUNY Alfred and a Bachelor of Business Administration Specialization in Accounting/Finance from SUNY Brockport.

Michael had been employed as a financial analyst for computer software accounting systems for Bausch & Lomb, Champion Products, Ragu Foods, and SAP accounting software. He was the recipient of the prestigious Bausch & Lomb Corporate President Award.

He was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 929 3rd Degree, where he served as financial secretary. He was one of the leaders of Up with People in Dunkirk.

An avid Buffalo Bills and Notre Dame fighting Irish fan, Michael enjoyed watching many Notre Dame games with his friends at the Knights of Columbus Club 929.

Michael was loyal to family and friends throughout his life and frequently reminded his sons that family comes first. His work ethic and determination brought success early in his life. Although he was burdened with persistent health issues in recent years, he helped whenever possible. His advice, kindness and generosity will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include two sons: Timothy (Marnee) Burke of Rochester, along with their children: James and Declan; Kevin (Kristina) Burke of Rochester, along with their children: Dylan and Delilah Rose; one sister, Lillian A. Cook of Dunkirk; one brother, the Rev. Richard A. Burke, C.P. of Scranton, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Margaret Poncharik, Mary Catherine Burke and Ellen C. Burke. A Memorial Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021 in Rochester.
